Mauritius had no indigenous population before it was colonised and consequently there is a racial harmony that is all too rare, but very appealing. • Hire a jeep and take off into the interior and to the less visited towns and villages. Mauritius is relatively prosperous, very safe and positively charming. The culture is a blend of Indian, Chinese, Creole and European and the scenery is pure tropics.

• Charter a boat and experience the thrill of big game fishing, beer in hand if preferred. Some of the largest Marlins ever caught have been in Mauritius; the Wahoo is reputed to be the fastest running fish in the ocean; the Sailfish literally flies through the air when snagged; or Tiger, Hammer Head, Black & White finned Sharks.
