The Dolphin Trail, South Africa A Luxury 17km Trail Spotting Whales & Dolphins

Stunning views of the rugged Tsitsikamma coastline and the chances of spotting whales, dolphins and the occasional otter are all part of this luxury 17km trail, which lasts for 2 days (3 nights) - the experience will both challenge and pamper you. Starting in the Tsitsikamma National Park at Storms River Mouth the trail winds its way eastwards through natural fynbos and pristine indigenous forest, over rugged rocks at the waters edge, to end on the banks of the Sandrift River.

Day of Arrival

Check in any time after noon at Tsitsikamma National Park. After moving to the dedicated Dolphin Trail chalets you are free to enjoy what remains of the afternoon at your leisure. In the evening head to the restaurant to meet your Dolphin Trail host who will answer any questions you may have and will give you information regarding the trail.

Hiking Day 1

Early risers can enjoy the stunning views of their surroundings before breakfast. Your luggage is collected from your chalet and you meet your guide, who will be with you for the 2 days of hiking. Depart to Storms River Mouth and the Khoisan Cave. Weather permitting, there will be a 25-minute boat trip into the river gorge. After crossing Storms River Mouth on the suspension bridge, follow a steep and rocky path to the Lookout Point for a magnificent view of the Tsitsikamma National Park. A long descent through indigenous forest takes you to a perfect place for your picnic lunch, in the shade of the trees or on the rocks in the sun. The next climb up Steilkop (meaning Steep Hill) is quite taxing and follows immediately. There is no rush on this trail so you can walk at your own pace. Once you have conquered Steilkop it is a comfortable forest walk to Misty Mountain Reserve. Enjoy an ice cold drink or a hot cup of tea before being shown to your luxury chalet with a 180 degree view of the Indian Ocean. Collapse and relax, making use of the lovely swimming pool or spa bath, or take advantage of the opportunity to go bass fishing in the lake.

Hiking Day 2

Today's route is mainly at sea level and the morning walk along the coast is magnificent. Enjoy the beautiful plant life & rocky scenery and keep your eyes open for Cape Clawless Otters. Swimming and snorkelling are possible in a couple of rock pools en route. At times you are required to clamber over rocks that are often damp from the sea spray, so take care. After a stiff climb you will reach a beautiful spot for lunch in the forest. Soak up the peace & tranquillity of the forest before setting off on the last 3 km through indigenous fynbos and to a well earned drink before being shown to your Fernery Chalet nestled in fynbos along the river. Several activities are available for those who are still feeling energetic, such as boating, cycling and bird watching. A swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna are there for your use.

Day of Departure

The weary can sleep in and enjoy the peace of their chalets whilst early risers are welcome to go bird watching or visit the fern export operation. After breakfast the luggage is loaded and you set off on a scenic 4x4 trip through the old Storms River Pass. On arrival at the Tsitsikamma National Park you will go your separate ways.
